Watch Out for Spoon Toenails

Spoon toenails are a nail bed abnormality where the toenails curve upward around the edges similar to the shape of a spoon. Spoon toenails can easily crack or split, causing the skin under the nail to become very dry. More importantly, spoon toenails can be sign of anemia, iron absorption problems, hypothyroidism or heart disease.*

Mild cases of spoon toenails are usually harmless, however, they could indicate more serious health problems. If you notice split toenails, visit a podiatrist—treatment options such as a special diet, supplements and moisturizing creams are available.
