Young athletes often complain of heel pain. This condition, known as apophysitis, occurs when the heel plate becomes inflamed. This is a common condition among young athletes ages 10-15 because their heel bones have not completely matured yet. Children who engage in running and jumping sports, such as soccer or basketball, are more likely to develop this condition, which causes pain in the back of the heel.*
If your young athlete is experiencing pain, then you need to establish a break from all sports including Physical Education in school. Allow time to rest and stretch. If the condition does not improve in a few weeks, have your child see a foot doctor and consider a boot or cast to aid in healing.
