Walking for Stronger Bones

As men and women get older they will experience a loss in bone density. This problem can lead to osteoporosis, which affects close to 10 million people in the United States. One way to combat this is to walk. Our bones store around 99 percent of our body’s calcium and when we perform weight-bearing exercises, it reminds our bodies to hold on to our calcium storage. Walking is an easy and great weight-bearing exercise because each time we take a step; gravity provides resistance and pulls down making our bones support the weight of our bodies. [1]

Try walking at least 30 minutes a day to help strengthen your bones. Do it all at once or in three-ten minute sessions.
