Athlete’s foot is a fungal infection of the skin and nails that can actually lead to toenail fungus. They are like fungal roommates living on your toes. Athlete’s foot is mainly caused when your feet become too moist and don’t have air to breathe. This causes fungus to grow and the symptoms are: cracked and peeling skin, itching, burning, and stinging sensations. If left untreated, the toenails become susceptible because they offer the fungus a great place to grow…under the nails. Toenail fungus symptoms are: the nails change to a yellowish color, they become thicker, and debris collects under the nail.[1]
Some tips to prevent athlete’s foot and fungal infections are: don’t share shoes, wear socks that are absorbent, and always wear sandals when walking in moist areas.
