Take the appearance of your nails seriously! They have the great ability to give us signs when something is wrong with the body. Some localized deformities that are caused by injury or inflammation can be taken care of by grooming and keeping the area clean and dry. However, if you notice changes in your toenail, such as changes in color, shape, texture, size, or constant pain and infection, seek out your doctor right away. Some diseases that affect the nails are: inflammatory bowel disease, kidney and liver disease, psoriasis, rheumatoid arthritis, and some cancers.[1]
When in doubt, see your doctor! Never assume the deformity will simply go away. The body gives us signs when there’s trouble and it’s up to us to listen and act!
