Toe walking in children may be caused by tight hip flexors. Before you get worried about the more serious implications of toe walking, try Achilles tendon stretching first. Children often improve after these initial treatments. If they don’t respond to stretching, a therapist or athletic trainer can evaluate him or her and recommend what steps to take next.*
To instruct your child on how to perform an active Achilles stretch, have him or her sit with their legs stretched straight in front. Then encourage your child to lean forward and gently pull his or her toes toward them. They should feel a stretch in the back of the bottom of their calf while holding for five seconds, and then switch to repeat.
