The ankle is the most common area for sprains. An ankle sprain is when the ligaments between the bones have become stretched or torn. Most severe ankle sprains go untreated because many think that the sprain will just go away. Not true! The signs of an ankle sprain are pain or tenderness, swelling, bruising, stiffness, coldness or numbness in the foot, and the inability to walk or put weight on the joint. If you experience extreme pain or bruising, see a doctor immediately in case the injury is really a fracture or broken ankle.
To reduce pain, swelling and bruising remember RICE: Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation. Rest your ankle, use ice packs, wrap your ankle and raise your ankle above your heart.[1]
