Perform a Shoe Test

Bad shoes account for about 90% of all foot problems. No matter what type of shoe you are wearing make sure that the heel counter is stiff and firm upon squeezing, the arch is firm and should not twist easily, the ball of the shoes should bend to allow your feet to naturally roll over, and the more cushion and traction on the outer sole of the shoes the better.[1]

Next time you purchase a pair of shoes, perform a shoe test. Squeeze the heel counter, twist the arch, and bend at the ball of the shoes.
