How Limb Length Discrepancies Can Cause Discomfort

Limb length discrepancies of the lower extremities are also known as “short leg syndrome”. This problem affects nearly 80% of the population, and can result in pain in the pelvis, hips, or lower back. Pain can be found in the longer limb because that limb has more contact with the ground and is forced to absorb more pressure and stress. The short limb is also at risk for painful shin splints, a result of overstraining while walking or running.*

Biomechanical orthotic therapy is an effective treatment method for functional limb length discrepancies. Larger discrepancies can be treated by a doctor, who may improve the condition by putting a lift on the shorter limb.
