How to Treat Ingrown Toenails

Ingrown toenails can be inherited or caused by tightly fitting shoes, however, cutting too deeply into the corners of your nails is the most common cause of them. When you cut too deeply, skin grows over your nail, making you susceptible to a bacterial infection. You’ll be able to tell if your ingrown toenail is infected based on any redness, heat or swelling.*

Treat an ingrown toenail infection at home by soaking in Epsom salt for 15-20 minutes, use sterile clippers to trim the nail, then apply antibacterial ointment (like Neosporin) and a bandage. If your nail does not improve, make an appointment to see your doctor.
